On set, I have this one thing I repeatedly say to myself: One shot at a time.
I didn’t grow up anywhere near the entertainment industry. I grew up as the son of a golf pro. And before every tournament I played in or any match I had, my dad would tell me the same thing, “Take it one shot at a time." Don’t get ahead of yourself. And don’t live in the past. Simply focus on what’s in front of you.
I’ve turned that advice into my motto on set. My directorial work generally revolves around getting an authentic performance out of athletes or celebrities, and a big part of directing them is about crafting a spot I can capture within the time constraints of their tight schedules. The time crunch can stress out a lot of directors, but I embrace the challenge. I focus on what’s in front of me and take it one shot at a time.
I’ve built my career around creating authentic, exciting performances from athletes, celebrities, and actors. A believable and strong performance should be priority number one for every director, and I take special pride in crafting that sort of performance from whoever I have the pleasure of directing.
